Literary Translator – amplifying marginalized voices

My name is Jeremy Powell Rios. I am a translator, editor and sensitivity reader based in Dresden, Germany. I offer literary, academic, scientific, technical, and multimedia translations, as well as editing and sensitivity readings.

The languages I work with are English, German, Spanish and Galician.

Current translation focus is German to English.

Why Diversity Amp Translate?

As part of BIPOC*, migrant, and queer communities the focus of my translation projects are based on amplifying the voices and visibilizing the experiences that society and history continues to marginalize and oppress. Simply put, I prioritize translating literary and political works from diverse perspectives and experiences.

About me

I was born in Washington State (USA) and lived there until 2008. While completing my Bachelor’s degree in Translating and Interpreting in Vigo (Galicia, Spain) from 2014-2019, I made the decision to continue specializing in languages and worked as an English teacher from 2017-2020. As I saw that my language skills had reached a native level in Spanish and Galician, I chose to move to Germany, seeing this as the most effective way to gain high competence in the German language.

This took me to Dresden in 2020 where I worked as a political educator for youth groups and had the opportunity to interact with diverse people and languages from around the world. I continued to carry out language work, using my skills to offer translating and interpreting services to different communities and projects. I became voluntarily active in a self-organized feminist library, where I helped with arranging the space, workshops and community events. This included reading circles of politically related books and texts from marginalized communities, as well as discussions with some of the authors.

Since 2023 I have been working as a freelance translator, editor and sensitivity reader with English, German, Spanish, and Galician, in particular with literary, academic, scientific, technical and multimedia texts.
